Bhaṅgṛā is a type of traditional dance of the Indian subcontinent, originating in the Majha area of Punjab. The dance was associated primarily with the spring harvest festival Baisakhi, and it is from one of the major products of the harvest—bhang —that bhangra drew its name. Today, bhangra is a crucial way for young Indian-American college students to carve out a space to socialize and explore their culture. Created for and popularized by Indian Cinema, Bollywood dance pulls from a variety of influences, including hip-hop, modern, and jazz dance along with traditional Indian dance to create a style which is colorful, dramatic, and fun.
